The Korea Accelerator Association(한국액셀러레이터협회) has released the 2023 Korea Accelerator Annual Report, which analyses the current status and outlook of the domestic accelerator industry.
Based on the Disclosure Information Of Accelerator Analysis (DIAA), Venture Investment Comprehensive portal Service (VICS) and public statistics of Korea Venture Investment as of December 2023, this Korea Accelerator Annual Report analyses the accelerator registration trend, accelerator investment trend, accelerator investment ranking, accelerator investment combination trend and 2023 accelerator survey results from five perspectives.
According to the report, as of December 2023, there were 461 active accelerators in Korea, with 74 new accelerators registered in 2023, seven fewer than in 2022. A total of 362 accelerators made investments in 2023, with a cumulative investment of approximately $2.05 billion (KRW 277.02 trillion).
In 2023, they invested $493.2 million (KRW 667.1 billion), down 28.5% from $690 million (KRW 932.9 billion) last year. The number of invested companies also decreased by 11.2% from 1,836 in 2012 to 1,631 in 2013. The decrease in accelerator investments is attributed to the harsh winter season.
The amount invested in early-stage companies less than three years old also decreased. In 2023, $264.3 million (KRW 357.5 billion) was invested, down 38.5% from $430 million (KRW 581.3 billion) last year.
As of December 2013, the distribution of accelerators across the country shows that 252 accelerators are concentrated in the Seoul region alone, accounting for 54.7% of the total.
In the Chungcheong region, 48 accelerators are active, accounting for 10.4% of the total. Of these, 24 are located in Daejeon, which is the third largest concentration of accelerators in the country.
The Gyeongnam region is also home to 41 accelerators, accounting for 8.9% of the total. Busan is tied with Daejeon for third place in the country in terms of the number of accelerators, with a total of 24.
